Motorcycle Salvage-Fair Market Value

Motorcycle Accident Claim in California

California Motorcycle Law

If the insurance company declares that your motorcycle is a total loss, you may still want to keep your motorcycle and you can make an offer to the insurance company to keep it. Generally, they will establish the "salvage value" for the parts of your motorcycle. It may be worth it for you to reduce your net property damage claim by the salvage value usually between $200.00 and $500.00 so that you can buy the motorcycle for parts, or attempt to repair the motorcycle yourself. You can do that, but you end up effectively "buying" your motorcycle from the insurance company. The motorcycle will then have a salvage registration with the California Department of Motor Vehicles. This means that you may still have a good bike that has been repaired, but you will have difficulty if not an impossible task of selling your bike at some time in the near future because it has a salvage registration. If you have no incentive to repair your bike or try to salvage parts, we recommend the "no hassle" approach to accept the property damage draft and have the insurance company sell your bike for salvage, thereby giving you the salvage value.
